Starting in the 1970s, Desmond Tutu became an important leader in the fight against apartheid, the system of racial segregation that discriminated against the black population in South Africa. As an Anglican bishop, he used his position to denounce the injustices of the South African government and support non-violent protests. Tutu was one of the few religious leaders to openly condemn apartheid, even provoking the anger of the authorities. His voice became a beacon of hope for millions of oppressed South Africans.
